French Audio Dictionary

You would have thought that with such a high demand for a French language audio dictionary that someone would have cornered the market by now - but not so.

The FREE French audio dictionaries are generally OK but are quite limiting in terms of the amount of vocabulary they will contain. The sound quality may also be a bit fuzzy and rushed. However this may suit you and your French Language learning needs.

However if you are willing to pay there are some excellent French audio dictionaries about and which will suffice for most levels of French language learners.

This French audio dictionary is very good for learning the basics. You choose a topic such as 'The body' and you are taken to a picture dictionary and someone reads out all the items on the page. The voice is clear and not computer generated. Great for kids and adults.

Once you have worked your way round the site and taken a few wrong turns (it's not always very clear!), the audio dictionary section is good although sometimes it is spoken a bit fast. The sound is instant so no need to download anything and the words and phrases are spoken by a French person. What I also really liked is that you can practice a French dictation and then correct it.

AT&T Labs text to speech
This is a fun website whereby you choose the language you want to hear and whether you want a male or female voice, you then type in the words or phrases that you want to hear and it is spoken back to you.

More than 2000 words or expressions arranged in alphabetical order. It is OK as far as being free but I found the sound could be a bit distorted at times. It would suit occasional use.
