Encore and Toujours
What is the difference?

-- Learn Free French Online --

Encore and Toujours mean the same thing. Right?...

Wrong. They have similarities but they also have differences.

Both Toujours and Encore are adverbs, that is to say they are placed alongside a verb.

What is often confusing is that they each have several meanings and plus some of those meanings overlap.

Have a look at the encore and toujours table below to see what I mean.

English Meaning Encore Toujours
Again  X
Always    X
Another  X
Anyhow    X
Even  X
Still (X)  X
Yet  X ( X)

Still can be translated by both toujours or encore but toujours is slightly more accurate.

Note however that you would use encore if you are using still to modify an adjective.

Examples:

He is still sleeping = Il dort toujours.

We are still here = Nous sommes toujours ici.

He is always very nice = Il est toujours très gentil.

He has still not arrived ! = Il n'est pas encore arrivé !

Better still, let's go now = Encore mieux, allons y tout de suite.

She is even more beautiful = Elle est encore plus belle.

Yet can also be translated by both toujours or encore. However if you are using yet in a negative sense then use encore.

Examples:

He is not home yet = Il n'est pas encore rentré.

It's not finished yet = Ce n'est pas encore fini.

There may yet be time = Il est peut-être encore temps.

I have yet another letter to write = Jai encore une autre lettre à écrire.
