Free French Translation

I have been looking for decent Free French translation software for ages, and it's not been easy. So many are so inaccurate or really only have the capacity to translate simple short phrases.

In general, I am not a fan of computer generated translators as there is just too much room for error. There is nothing quite like a human touch but if you want a human touch then you are going to have to pay for it - that is unless you have a very kind French friend...

Having said that, don't be discouraged as there are some reasonable French translation software programs around which work well with short sentences which aren't too complicated.

So the list (small!) below contains my favorites for the moment. If you have come across a better free French translator, please let me know.

Google Translate
My top choice has got to be Google Translate. It is quick, easy and pretty accurate. I also like the fact that it gives you several options for some words so if you feel something is not quite right you can look at other word choices.

Word Reference
Word Reference has got to be my top choice for individual word translations. I also like the fact that there is a forum where you can find all sorts of gems using colloquial French.

Free Translation
Instantly translate your documents and emails. Not bad but has some inaccuracies and tends to translate word for word rather than making sense of the whole phrase.
