Exception :
If the noun following the prepostion de is "specific", (that is to say it refers to specific people or things rather than people or things in general) then the definite article (le, la, les) is used as well.

Many of the flowers are red - beaucoup des (de+les) fleurs sont rouges..... (specific as I am referring to some flowers that I already know about or have seen).
