"Learning a bit of French for travel opens up so many doors"
I have travelled round the world quite a bit. I lived overseas as a child, I worked overseas as a nurse and now I live overseas with my family and we will continue to do so for a few years yet.
One really important thing that I have learnt is that:
It is so important to learn a few basic phrases in the local language.
This is not only polite but shows that you are willing to experience and integrate into the lifestyle and culture. I am amazed how many times the simple phrases (in the local language) "Hello, how are you?" and "Thank you very much" have got me out of difficulty.
