If you wish to take a French Language exam and are not sure what is available, then see the list below. These French exams are the most widely taken and recognised. There are many centres that will help you prepare for them and it is worth following a preparatory course if you are not familiar with the format.

When you pass a French exam you will be issued with a Certificate or a Diplôme.

Test du connaissance du Français (TCF)

The TCF is a test which has been designed by the French Ministry of Education to evaluate a candidates' skills in French as a foreign language.

TCF is a language test in standard French meant for non French speakers. It is open to candidates of all ages and nationalities and does not require any specific training.

There are 3 compulsory multiple choice type tests covering reading, listening and grammatical comprehension plus 2 optional tests analyzing writing and speaking skills.

All candidates receive a certificate of their results which places them at one of six levels (from A1 to C2) on a competency scale as defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This means that it is not possible to fail the TCF.

Test d'Evaluation du Français (TEF)

The TEF is a test of fluency in French for non-native speakers. The certificate is awarded by the CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris/Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris) and is valid for one year from the date the exam was taken.

The TEF is officially recognized by the French Ministry of Education and helps gives candidates access to French Universities plus it is recognized by the Federal government of Canada as a proof of fluency in immigration procedures.

The test is made up of compulsory and optional sections. The reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary sections are mandatory multiple choice questions whilst the writing and speaking sections are optional.

Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française (DELF)

The DELF is a certificate awarded by the French Ministry of National Education. It is designed to evaluate a non native French speaker's ability in written and oral French and their ability to communicate effectively. It is valid indefinitely.

The DELF has 2 levels:

  • DELF premier degré (level 1) consists of 2 units (A1, A2). This validates a basic knowledge of French and a "survival" level for daily life.
  • DELF second degré (level 2) consists of 2 units (B1, B2). This confirms a good knowledge of French and the ability to communicate verbally and in writing covering a wide range of topics within the modern French language.

    After preparation for each unit you will be require to sit speaking, writing or oral tests. If you have previously passed the Test de connaissance du Français (TCF) with an above average score, you may be exempt from DELF level I.

    Candidates who obtain the DELF level I should be able to understand and make themselves understood in a wide variety of everyday situations in a French-speaking environment.
    Candidates who obtain the DELF level II will be able to operate in a more specialized area of interest (e.g. economics or another academic domain).

    Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF)

    The DALF is made up of 2 units (C1, C2) and candidates must have achieved DELF Level II or (in the U.K.) a pass at French GCE 'A' level in order to take the tests.

    Being in possession of the DALF shows fluency and spontaneous communication skills at the highest level.

    Candidates who pass the DALF are exempt from the language requirement exams for entry to French universities.

    Following the preparation for each unit, candidates will be expected to sit exams in speaking, writing, listening and reading.

    Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris exams(C.C.I.P.)

    The CCIP exams are for these wishing to work in certain professional sectors. French language exams can be taken in :

  • Tourism
  • Science and technology
  • Secretarial
  • Law
  • Foreign affairs amongst others.

    These exams require extensive preparation and are best done at a language school.

    Exam Preparation

    Whilst you can prepare yourself for the TCF and the TEF French language exam, the others do require guidance and instruction and really are best done at a language school or through the guidance of a qualified French tutor.

    French language exams are taken at an accredited center of which there are numerous in various big cities around the world. There are also text books that can help you prepare.
