French Politeness

French Politeness - Knowing some key words and how to address people is so important. It is not complicated and just being able to say a few words will take you far.

Below are some key French politeness words and phrases that you will hear being used around you all the time.

Stand in a market or shop and listen to how people greet each other. Repeat what they say in your head and then when you are confident enough, try saying a word or two to someone.

Please s'il vous plaît (plural, formal)
s'il te plaît (singular, informal)
veuillez (used in front of a verb)
Excuse me excusez-moi
I'm sorry to disturb you excusez-moi de vous déranger
Pardon me, I beg your pardon pardon
Nice to meet you enchanté(e) (de vous renconter)
It was nice meeting you Ravi(e) d’avoir fait votre connaissance
Thank you (very much) merci (beaucoup)
You're welcome, that's OK de rien
It was my pleasure je vous en prie (plural, formal)
je t'en prie
Bless you (after a sneeze) à vos souhaits (plural, formal)
à tes souhaits (singular, informal)
Don't mention it pas de quoi
