A scrummy and easy French toast recipe, which even the kids can make.
-- French Toast Recipe --
As I live in France and my kids and their French friends are always making French toast when they're peckish, I thought this French toast recipe actually originated from France.
It turns out I am wrong.
French Toast started life as German Toast!
It is said to date back to medieval times in the 16th century when food was made to go a long way. Stale bread (hence the name Pain Perdu) was revived when moistened with milk and eggs and this made it go further.
Today French Toast comes under various names :
Poor Knight's Pudding, Poor Knight's of Windsor, Gypsy Toast – England Pain Perdu – France French Toast, German Toast, Nun's toast, Egg Fried Pudding – US Pain Doré - Canada.
