Transparent Language What does mp3 mean?

MP3 is a digital music format which allows CD tracks to be reduced to around a tenth of their normal size without a significant loss of quality. Mp3 files can be listened to on your computer or mp3 player.

As these files are quite small, they can be quickly and easily downloaded from the internet and stored on your computer. You can then transfer these files to your mp3 player.

What does podcast mean?

Podcasts are a digital media files (usually audio) that can be downloaded from the internet. They are usually in the form of audio radio programmes which are automatically sent to your computer after you subscribe to them.

There are also Vodcasts which contain video as well as audio.

Although the word podcast originated from the words broadcasting and ipod, you do not need to have an ipod to listen to these files.

Podcasts are are mp3 audio files which you have subscribed to but mp3 files are not necessarily podcasts - there is a subtle difference.

When you wish to listen to an audio file from the internet you can do it 3 ways. Firstly you can watch it straight away through a process called streaming. Secondly you can download an mp3 file to listen to later. Thirdly you can subscribe to a podcast and the information will be automatically downloaded to your compute on a regular basis. Rather like subscribing to a magazine.

This is one of the newest methods to help you learn beginners French and is proving to be extremely popular. Their major selling point which I really like is the tools they give you which allows you to retain vocabulary and to learn ultra fast. It works on the principal of visualisation and word association. So for example the French for THE RABBIT is LE LAPIN - therefore imagine a RABBIT LAPPING at a bowl of water.

The French courses are available in a choice of SOFTWARE CD-ROM, AUDIO CD, or MP3 AUDIO formats. If you need French for travelling, for business or for schoolwork, this could be perfect for you. The whole course coves all the major grammar points you need for effective communication, including all major grammar points for GCSE. french before you know it This course is not totally in mp3 format. It comes either as a batch of CD's or a download with some additional mp3 vocabulary files. This might suit you if you are happy to study partly on a computer and partly on the move.

French Before You Know It! (BYKI) is perfect if you want to learn beginners French fast without lots of fuss. It focuses more on voacabulary than grammar so is great for basic everyday French.

It uses a system called Perfect Recall. Words and phrases are divided into lists by category. The user selects a word list and then goes to the activity of choice to learn the contents of that list.

What I especialy like about this program is that it allows pronunciation practice, with the ability to record your own voice and compare it to native speakers.

There is a free downloadable basic version so you can try before you buy which is a great idea. Find out more about BYKI

Rocket French I was a bit put off by the opening phrase "Who Else Wants to Learn to Speak French Confidently and Naturally In Less Than 8 Weeks?" - Always sounds too good to be true. However don't immediately dismiss this course either as it has a good following and some excellent reviews. It consists of either an mp3 download or you can order CD's (20 of them!). This teach yourself to speak French course is narrated by an English male voice and a French female voice. The pace is good and the presentation keeps your attention.

What I liked about this learn to speak French course is that you can score your progress as you go along and there is a forum which I always think are invaluable for support. Plus there is a weekly newsletter with great tips and interesting snippets. Find out more about Rocket French
