Manquer - To Miss


The French verb Manquer means to miss and is one verb that often causes a lot of confusion - that is until you grasp a few fundamental rules.

Some simple rules :

  • Manquer is a regular -er verb
  • Manquer + direct object (eg noun) means to miss something
Example:
Je manque le chocolate! - I miss chocolate!
Elle a manqué le train - She missed the train
Dépêche-toi ! Tu vas manquer l'avion !- Quick! Your'e going to miss the plane!
  • Manquer + de + direct object (eg noun) means to lack something
Example:
Il manque de courage - He lacks courage
Ce ragout manque de sel - This stew lacks salt
Il manque des pages à ce livre - There are some pages missing from this book
  • Manquer + de + verb means to fail to do something
Example:
Ils ont manqué de faire leurs devoirs - They failed to do their homework.
Ne manque pas de m'écrire! - Be sure to write to me ! (Literally: Don't fail to write to me.)
Il a manqué de faire la vaiselle - He failed to wash up
J'ai manqué de trouver ta maison - I didn't manage to find your house
  • Manquer + à means to miss someone/something/somewhere
Example:
Tu me manques - I miss you. (Literally : Tu manques à moi - You are missing to me)
Est-ce que je te manque ? - Do you miss me?
Ses amis manquent à Ellie - Ellie misses her friends
