Review Champs Elysees

I tested the Champs Elysées Plus

Champs Elysees

What Is Champs Elysées?

Champs Elysées is an Audio French language learning program that you subscribe to.

Who's It For?

Champs Elysées is for advanced to intermediate learners. Maybe you have already studied for a few years and you need to brush up on your grammar and vocabulary or maybe you want to improve your listening and comprehension skills or to speak more fluently.

Well then Champs Elysées could be perfect for you.

I would say it is not a program for children as the audio articles can be quite complex in content but older teenagers might well enjoy it

Method Of Use:

Champs Elysées is subscription based and you can subscribe for a period ranging from 5 months to 2 years.

Each month approximately you will receive in the post an audio CD/cassette plus a magazine booklet which contains the audio texts in written French. As an extra you can also receive a monthly audio study supplement (CD or cassette) and a workbook.

The optional study supplement uses the audio texts from the main CD/cassette to help with comprehension, grammar and vocabulary building.

Tip: It is definitely worth getting the audio study supplement as well as it really enhances your grammar learning and gives so many useful snippets of everyday spoken French both in grammar and vocabulary.

My First Impressions :

My subscription arrived very quickly and I was eager to get going. The package included the main audio CD and transcript booklet plus an optional audio study CD and workbook.

It took me a while to work out what to do first as there were no particular instructions. I started off by listening to the first extract on the audio CD but felt a little overwhelmed so decided to try out the study supplement which was what I should have done in the first place!

The study supplement CD is divided into 2 parts and all the exercises are based around the audio texts on the main CD. The first part concentrates on exercises to develop your listening and comprehension skills and the second half concentrates on developing your grammar and vocabulary.

There are lots of varying exercises and I practiced exercises such as listening and repeating, listening to and recognizing phrases, grammar rules, audio crosswords, translation to name but a few.

None of the exercises were too long so it was very easy to feel that I had achieved something in a short space of time. That was great for me as sometimes I find it difficult to find a decent amount of time to sit down and study.

At the back of the study supplement booklet there are the corrections to the exercises plus a translation into English of the audio extracts used.

After working my way through the study supplement I felt more than ready to tackle the main audio CD, unlike when I first listened to it. The study supplement had really helped me to prepare for it and I was immediately able to understand the main principles behind each audio text.

Each audio feature is presented rather like a radio broadcast (no slowing down of speech for non native listeners!). If you like you can read the full transcript for each text in the accompanying booklet and alongside is a glossary of explanations of difficult/important words and phrases. I found this bit particularly useful and interesting and learned a lot of useful phrases that I hope to slip into my conversation in the near future!

The whole CD contains about an hour of audio divided into around 10 broadcasts which cover a varied range of topics such as politics, entertainment, sports, travel, culture and current affairs.

What I Liked About Champs Elysées

  • There are not many French learning products on the market that cater for upper intermediate and advanced learners – Champs Elysees certainly does.
  • Very portable product in that you can listen to it at home, in the car/train/plane or whilst out and about. The booklets are small enough to fit in a coat pocket, bag or briefcase.
  • Great for learning/understanding colloquial and everyday French that you wouldn't find in many other French courses/books.
  • Excellent for improving vocabulary.
  • Champs Elysees focuses a lot on listenting and understanding everyday dialogue which is so important.
  • Interesting topics that help to keep you up to day with French culture, politics and everyday life.
  • There is an online forum which could be great for support.

    Points to Think About

  • Champs Elysees is not a course for beginners.
  • There are no real instructions with the main audio CD so it is up to you to use the audio CD as you wish. However the study supplement guides you all the way with full explanations and answers.
  • You will need a CD or cassette player.
